Klubertanz to lead Crusaders
But goals ‘modest’ as team lacks depth

WAUKESHA – While his team has some talent, Steve Plechaty is unsure if there is enough this year.

“We just don’t have the depth,” the Catholic Memorial High School girls golf coach said. “We’re keeping our team goals modest. It’s going to be about trying to improve.”

Leading this year’s team will be senior Lauren Klubertanz, a first-team All-Classic 8 Conference golfer last season with the potential, Plechaty said, to compete for the league’s Player of the Year award. She received honorable mention on last year’s all-state team.

“She is our strongest player,” Plechaty said. “She has a good shot to be Player of the Year, which is one of her goals. She is definitely one of the stronger golfers in the conference.”

CMH also returns junior Dana Ahlstrom and senior Alyssa Opella. Ahlstrom finished 30th at the sectional level last season, and Opella was 47th. Sectional competitors Ava Olson and Julia Terasa both graduated.

Plechaty is trying to coax sophomore Jessica Heyrman to stick with golf. She was practicing with the team through the first week of practice, but she was planning on trying out for the Crusaders’ volleyball team, which had practice begin a week after golf.

“If she stayed, she would be our No. 3 player, but she has her heart in volleyball right now,” Plechaty said.

Junior Hannah Petre, freshman Claire Prager and junior Valerie Zanotelli also are vying for regular varsity spots.

“A lot depends on how well the freshmen look and if we get (Heyrman) to play with us,” Plechaty said. “We just don’t have the depth to go with what Lauren and Dana can do.”
