Wrestling Sectionals

PEWAUKEE – For the first time since the 2000-01 season the Pewaukee High School wrestling team did not qualify for a team sectional tournament.

Delavan-Darien won Saturday’s Division 2 regional tournament at Pewaukee, scoring 258 points to runner-up Pewaukee’s 244.5. Catholic Memorial was fourth with 144 points.

Only regional champions advance to team sectionals.

“I knew after the first round that we very likely had already lost it,” Pewaukee coach Ed Kurth said. “We needed everyone to advance into the top four to beat an experienced team like Delavan-Darien in a tournament setting and we fell short.”

But Pewaukee finished with five regional champions and five runners-up who will advance to this Saturday’s individual sectional tournament. The top two in each weight class in Division 2 advance.

Pewaukee champions were Tom Shafer at 112, Nathan Moore at 119, Gill Saya-ang at 125, Josh Berg at 140 and Tom Mischker at 160.

Mischker rallied from a 7-4 deficit to score four points in the final six seconds to claim his first regional championship a week after winning the Woodland Conference championship with an overtime victory in the final.

Saya-ang led Catholic Memorial’s Matt Krause 2-1 in the championship match before sustaining a significant cut to side of his face. Gill had it wrapped up and went back in, fending off a late attack and shot in for a buzzer-beating winning takedown and a 4-2 victory.

Pewaukee wrestlers who finished second were Sam Nevermann at 130, Chris Czech at 135, Jordan Porter at 152, Nathan Knutson at 171 and Dan Brown at 215.

Catholic Memorial’s Matt Groehler pinned Pewaukee’s Brown in 2:50 of the 215-pound championship match. Memorial’s Nick Olson also qualified for sectionals by finishing second at 285.

Memorial’s Romeo Orosco (119) also lost a championship match. Krause and Orosco each wound up third after losing second-place wrestleback matches.
