WAUKESHA – The Catholic Memorial and Wisconsin Lutheran high school football teams are similar.

The Crusaders spend the regular season playing in the Classic 8 Conference, which is loaded with larger schools such as Arrowhead and Mukwonago.

The Vikings, meanwhile, face off against large schools such as Hartford in the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference.

So when the two teams are pitted against schools their own size, they are definitely battle-tested and ready for the WIAA Division 3 playoffs.

They will clash at 4 p.m. Saturday at Carroll University’s Schneider Stadium in a third-round game.

Lutheran has won three Division 3 state titles in recent years under head coach Kirk DeNoyer, a Waukesha resident. CMH was within reach of the state final last season, but lost on a last-second touchdown by Reedsburg in the semifinal round.

Each coach has won four state titles – Young won four WISAA titles, and DeNoyer won one WISAA title and three WIAA titles.

Union Grove beat Wisco in last year’s second-round Division 3 playoffs to derail a potential meeting with CMH.

The Vikings beat CMH 28-10 in a 2008 second-round playoff game. The Crusaders beat Wisco in the first round of the 2001 playoffs, when CMH was the runner-up in Division 2.

Lutheran is 9-2 this season and finished second behyind Hartford in the Little Ten. The Vikings lost to Hartford and Waukesha West. CMH is also 9-2, having lost to Arrowhead and West.

The Wolverines beat Wisco 33-13 and CMH 30-17.

CMH senior Pete Karczewski has run for 15 touchdowns this season and carried for nearly 1,300 yards. Senior quarterback Dominic Zanoni has thrown four touchdown passes while missing some time with an injury.

Lutheran’s Tim Bauman and Justin Hysi each have run for more than 1,000 yards this year, Bauman scoring 19 touchdowns and Hysi 10.
