MILWAUKEE – In a battle between what have been two of the finest high school girls volleyball programs in the state in recent years, defending Division 2 state champion Catholic Memorial defeated Menomonee Falls 25-19, 25-21 in the Gold Bracket championship match of the Joust Tournament on Saturday.

Catholic Memorial defeated Arrowhead 25-12, 25-14, while Menomonee Falls beat Burlington 16-25, 25-13, 15-4 in the semifinals. Defending Division 1 state champion Muskego lost to Madison Edgewood 25-27, 26-24, 15-4 in the Silver Bracket championship match. Waukesha West lost to Middleton 18-25, 25-10, 15-10 in the semifinals of the White Bracket.

Memorial, Arrowhead and Pius gave the Classic 8 Conference three pool champions. Memorial went 7-0 in the 24-team tournament, raising its season record to 8-0. Memorial had a different kill leader in each of its seven matches. “That shows the depth of our attack,” Memorial coach Ted Schulte said.

Five Crusaders had 27 or more kills in the tournament, not including junior outside hitter Greta Davis, who led the team in the championship match with eight kills. Senior outside hitter Aly Kujawa had a team-high 36 kills in the tournament, followed by senior middle hitter Kelli Browning and sophomore outside hitter Aly Dawson with 28 apiece, and junior middle hitter Amanda Hansen and senior outside hitter Kate Acker with 27 apiece. Browning added 17 blocks, junior setter Nikki Welsh had 81 assists and senior libero Patti Abshire had 33 digs.
“She triggered the offense with great passing and service receptions the entire tournament,” Schulte said of Abshire.
