Team counts on three seniors

WAUKESHA – A young Catholic Memorial High School softball team will rely on its three returning senior letterwinners as it tries to improve on its fifthplace finish in the Classic 8 Conference last season.

Memorial coach Keith Johnson, beginning his seventh season guiding the Memorial varsity, has five returning letterwinners overall, including seniors Erika Lee (second baseman), Alicia Humphrey (outfielder) and Kristina Rodriquez (catcher; honorable mention all-conference each of the past two seasons). Also back are sophomore shortstop Lauren Krolikowski, honorable mention all-conference last season, and junior third baseman/catcher Samantha Schreiner.

Rodriguez batted .314 with 14 RBIs last season, while Krolikowski batted .310 with a .534 slugging percentage. Promising newcomers are sophomores Morgan Schneider (infielder), Jenny Waupoose (outfielder) and Rebecca Stekiel (first baseman/pitcher), and freshmen Ranchel Ramthun (pitcher) and Tia Johnson (second baseman/outfielder). First baseman/pitcher Haley Schreiner, secondteam all-conference for two years, is the key graduation loss from last year’s team that was 6-14 overall and 5-9 in conference.

Other key graduation losses are four players who were honorable mention all-conference last season: outfielders Sarah Milsna, Cassie Galentine and Brianne Buerger and pitcher Meredith Dentice. Buerger batted .349 with 20 RBIs last season. With five freshmen and sophomores starting, Johnson said, “Seniors will need to lead by example.” Johnson, who picks Kettle Moraine, Pius and Waukesha West as the teams to beat in the Classic 8, said his team will have solid hitting and defense this season.
