Crusader Boys Soccer Preview

Crusaders look for return to state
Three standouts back

WAUKESHA – The Catholic Memorial High School boys soccer team, which has been WIAA Division 2 state runner-up two straight seasons, will begin its quest for a fourth straight statetournament berth with three first- and secondteam all-Classic 8 Conference players. The Crusaders have claimed four second-place finishes in six appearances at state in the past 10 seasons.

The returning players include senior Alden Bennett, who was a first-team all-conference pick. Junior Eric Schoendorf and sophomore Aaron Horvat were second-team selections, while senior goalkeeper Tim Shore received honorable mention. But coach John Bisswurm, who is starting his 30th season, said, “We hope to find replacements for the nine players that we have lost from last year's team and to improve as the year goes on.”

Memorial was fourth in the conference last season, but went on to finish 19-4-3 overall with a 3-2 loss to Green Bay Notre Dame in the state championship game. Memorial returns 10 other lettermen: seniors Joey Chiappetta, Karl Kallio, Mike Knueppel, Hunter Lange, Danny Smith and Peter Schuster, juniors Nate Craft and Nate Murawski and sophomores Patrick McNulty and Mark Samuel.

The biggest losses to graduation were Conor O’Halloran, a second-team all-league choice, and Shaun Knapp and Jimmy Delforge, who received honorable mention. But Bisswurm lists several promising newcomers: juniors James Masterson, Sean Spencer and Ryan Zielinski; sophomores Ryan Allen, Brad Suchorski and Jonah Sutherland and freshmen Joel Balicki and Ryan Zingsheim. Bisswurm sees Kettle Moraine and defending champion Arrowhead as the Classic 8’s top teams this season.
