Chicago Shakespeare Returns to CMH

CMH English teacher Mr. Tom New reporting --

On Wednesday, March 18, Chicago Shakespeare returned to CMH for the third year in a row. This year’s production, part of their Short Shakespeare series, was an amazing production of one of the Bard’s best loved comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A packed house gave a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of a production that had our students enrapt by the internationally renowned theater company’s high energy interpretation of the classic tale. The performance was timed to allow for our audience to ask the actors questions about the production. As they were loading into their vans and truck for the return trip to the Windy City, members of the production cast and crew were effusive in their praise of our students. They told me that this was one of the best shows they had had in their eleven week run, and that the enthusiasm from our audience was a huge reason for that. Lacy Katherine Campbell, the actress playing Helena, added that the questions from our students were perhaps the most insightful they had heard thus far.

Major thanks go out to the Friends of the Arts for all that they have done and continue to do in bringing Chicago Shakes here to CMH. As one of the tech crew members, here for the third time, said to me, when she heard they were coming to Memorial, she told all the rest of the cast and crew that they were in for one of the best days on their tour. “You all treat us so well. You have super-eager kids here to help with load-in and load-out, your audiences are so appreciative, and those drama moms feed us great food. You all are legend!” As they left, each one carrying a CMH coffee mug, they asked me to say a big thank you to everyone for their help in making their day and their performance something special. I’ll add my own thanks to everyone who helped, made adjustments, showed understanding, and pitched in to make this a truly special day, one our students will always be able to look back on as one of their great CMH memories.

A report from one parent who was able to attend --

Thanks for bringing in the theater group again this year. They were truly impressive yesterday, and the kids definitely enjoyed the performance.
